As I go to the escalator
\na young fellow and a lovely young girl
\nare ahead of me.
\nher pants, her blouse are skin-tight.
\nas we ascend, she rests one foot
\non the step above and her behind
\nassumes a fascinatin shape.
\nthe young man looks all around he appears worried,
\nhe looks at me.
\nI look away.<\/p>\n

no, young man, I am not looking,
\nI am\u00a0not\u00a0looking at your girl\u2019s behind.
\ndont worry, I respect her and I respect you.
\nin fact, I respect everything; the flowers that grow, young women,
\nchildren, all the animals, our precious complicated universe, everyone and everything.<\/p>\n

I sense that the young man now feels better and I am glad for him.
\nI know his problem: the girl has a mother, a father, maybe a sister or a brother,
\nand undoubtedly a bunch of unfriendly relatives
\nand she like to dance and flirt and she likes to go to the movies and sometimes
\nshe talks and chews at the same time and
\nshe enjoys really dumb TV shows and she thinks she\u2019s a budding actress and she
\ndoesn\u2019t always look so good and has a<\/p>\n

terrible temper and sometimes she almost goes crazy
\nand she can talk for hours on the telephone and she wants to go to Europe some summer soon
\nand she wants you to buy her a near-new Mercedes and she\u2019s in love with
\nMel Gibson and her mother is a
\ndrunk and her father is a racist
\nand sometimes when she drinks too much she
\nsnores and she\u2019s often cold in bed and
\nshe has a guru, a guy who met Christ
\nin the desert in 1978, and she wants to be a dancer and she\u2019s unemployed and she
\ngets migraine headaches everytime she
\neats sugar or cheese.<\/p>\n

I watch him take her up
\nthe escalator, his arm
\nprotectively about her waist, thinking he\u2019s
\nlucky,
\nthinking he\u2019s a real special guy,
\nthinking that nobody in the world has
\nwhat he has.<\/p>\n

and he\u2019s right, terribly
\nterribly right, his arm around
\nthat warm bucket of
\nintestine,
\nbladder,
\nkidneys,
\nlungs,
\nsalt,
\nsulphur,
\ncarbon dioxide
\nand
\nphlegm.<\/p>\n
